Happy (early) fall, my sweet friends! While it is actually the hottest it’s been all summer right now in Atlanta, I am choosing to celebrate the fact that it is September (and not the 97 degree heat) and add a few fall touches around our home. As I shared last week, we recently helped my mother-in-law downsize and move. As I was cleaning out her kitchen, I came across her recipe books and found a fun treasure. Among some other fun vintage recipe books, there was a small black binder filled with handwritten recipes from my husbands great grandmother.

Her name was Mary Coffee and there are several newspaper clippings included among the recipes that are dated 1932 to 1934.

Since bringing this recipe book home, I have been pouring over these precious pages and couldn’t resist framing a few for our kitchen. These framed handwritten recipes bring me so much joy when I see them!

Her handwriting is so beautiful and the recipes themselves are so interesting! It seems no one hand writes anymore and certainly no one is baking like this anymore.

Obviously, I never met Grandma Coffee but I did have the pleasure of meeting her daughter, Brian’s grandmother. Who lived to be 95! Certainly she enjoyed these dishes as a young girl. It’s funny how the older you get, you really do appreciate these little glimpses into your family history.

ANTELOPE RUNNER RUG

I think you will agree after seeing these, that they couldn’t just live tucked away in the kitchen cabinets. So I decided to grab a few and frame them for above our stove. I found three brushed 8×10 silver frames and to hang them I just used several 3M strips on each frame. The frames came with white matting to frame a 5×7 so I just put the recipes directly over the mat as their matting. I love the muted tones for fall!

For the rest of the counter styling, I just used a cutting board and added fun bottles under the frames. The copper measuring cups are vintage, the salt and pepper shakers were a wedding gift (so practically vintage at this point ha-ha) and the cute honey dish was my mother-in-laws.

To the left of the stove, I displayed a large silver platter and stacked two light aqua cookbooks. This Joy of Cooking cookbook also came from my mother-in-laws kitchen and is definitely vintage from 1967. Who would have guessed that my mother in law’s recipe books would be my most favorite items I came across during the move. 🙂

To the right, I corralled a collection of cutting boards in a copper planter I’ve used all over the house throughout the years. (and you guessed it, one of the cutting boards was my mother-in-laws!!)

The kitchen island is simply displaying this beautiful orchid that our realtor sent us last week. She is the one that helped us downsize my mother-in-law so it I guess this entire update to the kitchen came together through what was honestly a very stressful move. It’s nice to have a bright side to it all and some sweet family treasures for the next generation to enjoy!
